Job scams target exactly the people who can least afford to lose money: freshers, people who've just lost a job, and anyone desperate for work. They often use the names of real companies. The good news is that almost all of them share a few tell-tale signs.

The rule that catches almost every scam

A genuine employer never asks you to pay to get a job. Not a registration fee, not a security deposit, not a training fee, not a charge for a laptop or uniform. If money has to go from you to them before you start, walk away.

Nine warning signs

  1. You're asked to pay anything: registration, processing, training, document verification, a refundable deposit.
  2. You got the job without a real interview, or after a few chat messages.
  3. The salary is far above what the role normally pays, especially for work from home with no experience needed.
  4. The recruiter only talks on WhatsApp or Telegram and avoids a video or phone call.
  5. The email comes from a free address (gmail, yahoo) instead of the company's own domain.
  6. You're pushed to decide or pay today because "seats are limited".
  7. You're asked for bank passwords, OTPs or your card details.
  8. The offer letter has spelling mistakes, a blurry logo or a salary that doesn't match what was discussed.
  9. "Tasks" that pay small amounts at first, then ask you to invest money to unlock bigger payouts.

How to check an offer

  • Find the job on the company's own careers page.
  • Call the company using a number from its official website, not the one in the message.
  • Search the recruiter's name and the company together with the word "scam".

If you've been targeted

Stop all payments, keep screenshots of every message, and report it at the national cyber crime portal (cybercrime.gov.in) or by calling 1930. If you found the job on JobSpri, use "Report this job" on the listing so we can remove it. JobSpri automatically holds back listings that mention fees or deposits, but reports help us catch the rest.
